Our Dog’s Birthday

Celebrating Grace’s 7th Birthday with all-natural dog approved cake and ice cream!

I have always made it a point to take time and celebrate Grace’s birthday. There is so much our dog give us—unconditional love, cuddles, and lots of affection. Each year goes by so quickly, I can’t believe our Grace just turned 7! In the past, I have always ordered Grace’s cake from a lady I found on Etsy. Her cakes are super cute and come straight to your door! This year though, I decided to forego the store-bought cake and bake an all-natural cake myself. There aren’t many dog birthday cake recipes out there, so I used one that is the base for a baby’s 1st birthday cake but modified the recipe, swapping the applesauce with pureed pumpkin, to further reduce the sugar content. Even if the sugar is only from fruit, it can still be a lot on our dog’s. The “frosting” is made from a russet potato and the filling is simply sweet potatoes mixed with peanut butter. All in all, the cake turned out wonderfully, I even took a bite! It’s perfectly sweetened by the bananas and has a similar taste to banana bread.  To top it off, I made Grace salmon and chicken ice cream! Below are the recipes and some pictures of our little celebration!

Organic All-Natural Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

Grace’s Homemade Birthday Cake

All-Natural Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

We used organic ingredients but use whatever works best for you.

Cake Ingredients

5 ripe bananas (they should be spotty to almost brown)

½ cup pumpkin puree

½ organic peanut butter

3 tbsp coconut oil melted

3 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1 ½ cup whole wheat or all-purpose flour (if your dog has a grain allergy, swap this for a gluten/grain free option)

1 tsp cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Coat three 4” cake pans with butter and flour. You could also use two 8” cake pans, just reduce your cooking time by 5-7 minutes.

  2. Beat bananas with a mixer on medium low.

  3. Add pumpkin, peanut butter, and vanilla to the mixer and combine with bananas.

  4. In a separate bowl combine baking soda, baking powder, flour, and cinnamon. Once well combined, mix with wet ingredients.

  5. Spoon batter evenly among three cake pans and place in the oven to bake for 20 minutes. Check with a toothpick to ensure cakes are done. Note these do not rise very much.

  6. Allow cakes to cool.

  7. Once cakes have completely cooled, alternate filling (recipe below) in between the layers.

  8. Finally add the frosting!

The finished cake! I froze the cake layers prior to assembling it so there is a little ice. I do this with traditional cakes, but it’s not necessary with this one.

Cake Filling

Ingredients

2 large sweet potatoes

¾ cup organic peanut butter

Directions
While your cakes are cooling, make the filling.

  1. Boil two large sweet potatoes until soft. Approximately 7-10 minutes. We didn’t remove the skins as they add extra nutrients

  2. Combine in a mixer with peanut butter.

Peanut Butter & Sweet Potato Cake Filling—Yum!!!

Healthy Dog Approved Frosting Recipe

Ingredients

1 large organic russet potato

½ - 1cup organic greek yogurt

1T cornstarch

Directions

Peel and boil potato until it’s very soft. Mix with an electric mixer or beaters. Slowly add Greek Yogurt. You will need to add more or less depending on the size of your potato. Add 1T cornstarch for consistency and to improve the white color of the frosting. The consistency will be similar to traditional frosting.

I made the frosting the day before and stored it in the fridge without issue.

Delicious Potato Frosting!

Delicious Dog Ice Cream Recipe

Ingredients

1 pint heavy cream

1 pint whole milk

pinch of salt

5 egg yolks

¾ cup sugar

¾ cup shredded cooked or raw chicken

½ cup raw salmon

  1. Combine whole milk, sugar, and salt in a stock pot over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves into the milk.

  2. Put egg yolks into the mixer and turn the mixer on low.

  3. Using a ¼ cup of warmed sugar and milk mixture at a time, add it to the egg yolks. Do this 6-7 times until your egg yolks are warmed.

  4. Combine egg and milk mixture with remaining milk in the stock pot. Bring to a simmer. You have to stir constantly until the mixture can coat the back of a spoon.

  5. Once it is thick and delicious, gently add heavy cream to the mixture.

  6. Finally, when the mixture has cooled, place it in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning add chicken and salmon. We then put our ice cream mix into the ice cream maker for 30-45 minutes. You could also put it into a loaf pan line with parchment for a few hours if you don’t have an ice cream maker.

Now you have delicious dog approved ice cream. When we say dog approved—we mean your dog will love you like he’s never loved you before! Grace dances in circles around the kitchen when we take this out! We’ve never seen her drool so much 

Only provide your dog a spoonful at a time to avoid an upset tummy. Too much cake and ice cream isn’t good for anyone, including our best friends!

A Happier, Healthier Dog Through Enrichment

What is dog enrichment? It is a way to stimulate your dog’s mind. Dog enrichment has been shown to reduce dog anxiety as well as unwanted behaviors, leading to a happier, healthier dog. Below are a few easy ways to enrich your dog’s life and help curb doggy boredom.

Cognitive Enrichment

Dogs are smart creatures. They have natural instincts to hunt prey, dig, bury, herd, bark, etc. When you understand your dog’s natural instincts, you are better able to meet their needs. Your dog needs to put his mind toward something—freedom to express natural behavior.

Cognitive enrichment will get your dog’s brain working and help reduce undesirable behaviors.

Examples of Cognitive Enrichment:

  • K9 PuzzlesNina Ottosson makes great puzzles for dogs in a variety of skill levels. They can be found on Amazon or at your local pet store and range between $12-$25.

  • Towel Game – We love this game at our house. It can easily keep our very smart Weimaraner busy for 20+ minutes. Take an old dish towel or rag, put a treat in the middle, roll it up and tie it in a soft knot. Your dog will use his paws, nose, and mouth to work on getting the knot untied. To make this a little more challenging, stuff the towel in a cheap plastic pitcher or Tervis tumbler. Watch as your dog works to free the towel and untie the knot.

Note that you do need to watch your dog with this game as you don’t want them to get frustrated if they can untie the towel and end up eating part of it.

  • Box Game – This is a great game too, especially on a rainy day. Take an old box you no longer want, put a treat or two at the bottom and then fill it with crinkle newspaper or packaging paper. Lightly tape the box up and watch your dog go to work. This game can sometimes make a mess if our dog decides to tear the box apart afterwards, though this is part of the fun for her. We’d much rather her tear an old box apart than something we cherish.

  • Hide and Seek - We play this often in our house, especially when we’re going out the door. It helps our dog feel less anxious when we leave knowing that there is a fun game ahead.

Easy Hide and Seek Game:

  • ·Take a few small treats (we usually use small broken pieces) and hide them in accessible places for your dog

  • First, let your dog watch as you do it. Once they understand the game, make them sit and stay in the other room.

  • Once they are good at the game, make it challenging. We love hiding things under throw pillows, on windowsills, behind doors, under the coffee table, and on the bathtub ledge. Your dog will love using his nose to find the treats!

All Natural Chews

Chewing relaxes your dog and releases endorphins, making them a happier pooch! Many chew toys on the market today are made from dangerous plastic materials that aren’t good for your dog’s digestive tract. While they aren’t incredibly popular in the US, tree root chews are second nature in Europe and for good reason! Untreated hardwood roots allow your dog to express their natural instinct to chew—and not with your furniture. Hardwood root dog chews are safe, natural, and don’t contain extra calories! We’ve listed a few different options below.

We also are a big fan of White Oak Pastures grass-fed rawhide rolls. Their cattle is humanely raised in Bluffton Georgia. You can read more about them on their website, but they are huge in regenerative farming and their rawhide rolls are sun-dried and completely natural. They also last for HOURS with even the most aggressive of chewers. White Oak is extremely transparent with their farming practices, which we love at Grace’s!

Physical Enrichment

Dogs, much like young children, like to enhance or add complexity to their physical environment. These can be simple changes to stimulate your dog’s mind.

Examples of Physical Enrichment:

  • Rotate your Dogs Toys – simply take some and put them in a drawer. In a month or two, swap them out for others. It’s like an entirely new toy all over again.

  • Build a Fort Out of Pillow and Blankets – have the kids join in building the fort, you’ll be surprised by how interested your dog is in this new addition to his environment.

  • Dig/Buy Pit – Does your dog like to dig? It’s a natural behavior and for some breeds it’s second nature. Give your dog their own dig/bury pit by filling a baby pool with sand. To encourage them to use it, hide a few healthy treats or toys in the sand.

Social Enrichment

Sometimes your dog just needs to get out of the house. Social enrichment should be done frequently especially when dogs are young to help them understand acceptable behavior with other dogs and humans. Even if your dog is older, social enrichment is still needed for overall health and well-being.

Examples of Social Enrichment include:

  • Going for a Walk – take your dog on a Sniffari (sniffing safari)! Dogs’ noses are superhuman—quite literally. A dog has a sense of smell estimated to be 10,000x - 100,000x greater than humans. Dogs are mentally stimulated through smell and those allowed to explore the world through scent are proven to be calmer and more content. So, from time to time, please stop and let your dog sniff as much as they like!

  • Taking a Trip to the Beach – the beach is a combination of social and physical enrichment. It’s a great way to meet other dogs, play in the surf, and dig in the sand. Just be sure to provide lots of fresh water, shade, and ensure the sand isn’t too hot for their paws!

  • Going to the Store – Home Depot is incredibly welcoming of dogs. Additionally, your local garden store will often typically allow dogs inside.

What Makes Grace’s Different?

Grace’s is the only AAFCO approved dog food to use no synthetic vitamins or minerals. Further, Grace’s dog food is 100% organic and made from a wide variety of wholesome ingredients. Further, Grace’s is dehydrated raw to lock in nutrients.

Choosing a dog food is tough. There are 100s if not 1000s of options. It’s tricky to understand what everything means and furthermore, what option is best for your dog. At Grace’s, we are passionate about helping dogs live longer healthier lives. We understand that the food we feed our dogs will drastically impact their longevity and overall well-being.

While there are many alternatives to kibble on the market today, there are a few things that set Grace’s dog food and treats apart.

100% Organic Ingredients

Grace’s only uses organic ingredients in our dog food. Why is this? Organic meats, vegetables, and fruits, are held to a higher standard. By certifying a product as “Organic” means the food is inspected and certified by an independent inspector, one that is not employed by either the buyer or seller of the food. Additionally, to be certified organic, the food is grown and processed according to guidelines that prohibit the use of harmful pesticides, cannot be derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and animals raised organically do not receive growth hormones or antibiotics.

While some may consider the organic label nothing more than a marketing campaign, the cumulative effects of repeated exposure to pesticides and other harmful chemicals can have disastrous long-term effects on our dogs.

Further, organic farming is much better for our planet. It eliminates the hazardous chemicals that end up in our groundwater and oceans. Organic farming uses healthy soil to grow healthy plants while employing practices that have been around for thousands of years—such as crop rotation and the use of compost.

No Synthetic Vitamins or Minerals

Grace’s is the only dog food on the market to meet AAFCO standards without the use of synthetic vitamins or minerals. We only use 100% naturally occurring ingredients to obtain a nutritionally balanced meal. Synthetic vitamins and minerals are often not recognized by our dogs and therefore become stored in the kidneys. This can be extremely detrimental to your dog’s health long term. You may notice that many foods on the market have only a few ingredients followed by a smattering of supplements. This is because they aren’t creating a nutritionally balanced meal from whole food ingredients. Synthetic vitamins and minerals can also cause anaphylactic shock or even death when they are given too high of doses.

Grace’s uses a wide variety of ingredients to ensure nutrient requirements are met. Whole food ingredients ensure your dog absorbs the nutrients in their food and helps them lead a longer, healthier life.

Raw Dog Food and Treats

At Grace’s we are big believers in a raw diet. It’s the way our dogs have eaten for 1000s of years. Though, we understand that traditional raw foods can be messy and difficult to formulate on your own. By taking raw ingredients and dehydrating them low and slow—at temperatures of 140 degrees or less—we are able to kill harmful pathogens. This makes our food and treats safe for humans to handle but allows important nutrients to remain intact.

Beautiful Products for your Dog and Home: Dog Bowls

Beautiful, classic, timeless dog bowls that are safe and functional. These dog bowls will be in your family for years to come. Even better, almost all of them are made by small businesses in the USA.

These links are not commissionable. We don’t receive any compensation if you purchase an item below. The opinions below are that of our own.

Classic, Timeless Dog Bowls that are Safe and Functional

Finding a good dog bowl can be hard. Since dog bowls are not used by humans, they do not undergo the same rigorous quality inspections. Many bowls can contain harmful toxins such as Lead and Mercury or are simply poorly made. Your dog uses their bowls every single day, it is worth making a small investment in a quality product that will not only be safe but stand up for years to come.

What we look at when reviewing dog bowls:

Does it do the job it’s intended to do? At its core, a dog bowl needs to provide a safe and easy way for your dog to get their food.

Is it easy to clean? Since it’s something that is used daily, your dog bowl needs to be easy to clean.

Is it safe? Is it tested for harmful toxins such as Lead and Mercury. We stay away from all plastic dog bowls as they tend to leach dangerous chemicals into your dog’s food and water.

Where is it made? We always try to buy from the USA to support local economies and knowing that manufacturing standards are stricter here than in many other countries.

Will it blend well with existing décor? Lastly, since it’s something we see every day; we ask ourselves if it’s an aesthetically pleasing design and if the dog bowl will blend well with existing designs and décor.

Basis Pet Bowls

We use these at Grace’s and love them! They’re safe, inexpensive, easy to clean, and made by a family-owned company in Vermont. We pair these stainless steel bowls with an elevated feeder similar to the one shown below for larger dogs as it allows for the correct ergonomic feeding position.

One of the prettiest dog bowls we’ve ever seen! This ceramic Chinoiserie dog bowl is hand made in the USA. It’s dishwasher safe and comes in three sizes depending on your pet’s needs. The bowl can be personalized with your dog's name as well! We love the charming blue and white dog bowl, but the bowls come in a variety of colors to suit your own individual style and décor.  We’d love a set of our own dinner dishes to match this beautiful dog bowl!

Lovely Lucite Dog Bowls

This chic Lucite feeder with clear glass bowls that can be easily popped into the dishwasher for easy cleaning. They are great for a modern kitchen or for someone with a smaller space (Lucite allows spaces to appear larger and less cluttered).

The elevated stand provides for a better ergonomic eating position leading to better digestion and less neck strain for your dog.

Lucite is easy to clean and will blend well in the classiest of kitchens.

Rattan Dog Bowl

For those looking for a coastal or beach inspired dog bowl, look no further than Grace Hill’s Rattan Dog Bowl. A super simple design that would blend flawlessly in most homes and provide the kitchen with a warm classic touch. We’d swap out the bowl provided for a higher quality one (such as a Basis pet bowl) just to ensure the actual bowl is safe from toxins. The classic woven rattan is highly sophisticated and guaranteed to look on-trend for years to come.

Elevated Pet Feeders

If you have a larger dog, you may need to elevate their food bowl in order to improve digestion and lessen strain on their neck. This elegant dog feeder is made by a small business in the USA. It also comes with a set of stainless-steel human grade bowls.

If you want to choose your own style of bow but still need an elevated feeder, Larry and Louise Lumber make great elevated pet feeding stations where you can simply place your own stylish bowl.

Delightful Dog Beds That Last

These links are not commissionable. We don’t receive any compensation if you purchase an item below. The opinions below are that of our own.

Every dog needs a great dog bed—there is nothing that makes you feel better than a good night's sleep. Dog’s sleep between 12 and 18 hours each day, depending on age. Having a comfortable, safe place to catch some zzz’s is imperative to your dog’s health.

When looking for a dog bed, we look for a few things:

  •  Is the bed supportive? Much like mattresses for humans, a dog bed needs to cushion and support your dog’s body.

  • What’s it made from? Since our dogs spend so much of their lives sleeping, the fabrics in which they are resting their heads need to be safe. Ensure fabrics and foam inserts are free from harmful contaminants such as flame retardants, formaldehyde, mercury, lead, or other metals. We also look for GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified fabric, both of which mean the fabric was subject to strict testing for contaminants. Note that GOTS is a stricter standard and only allows for certified organic fibers to be used in the product.

  •  Can we clean it easily? A good dog bed needs to be easily cleaned. We look for beds where the entire cover can be removed and thrown into the wash.

  • Will it show every speck of dirt? While we want our dog’s bed to be clean, we don’t want to wash it every day. A good fabric will hide excess dirt and shedding.

  • Will it last? We ask ourselves if it’s made from good fabric that will stand up for years to come with daily use. A company that stands behind their products is usually a good sign that the bed will last.

Jax and Bones Beds

Admittedly we have two of these in our own home and love them. We’ve had the one for 7+ years and it’s still going strong with regular use and wash.

Why we love Jax and Bones Beds

  • Provide good support

  • The bolsters and the pillow cover unzip and can be thrown in the wash

  • Covers are antimicrobial, stain, and dirt resistant

  • Beds are handmade in California

  • Filling is made from recycled materials

  • Products endure rigorous testing to ensure safety for your dog and family

  • Great neutral fabrics that blend with home

  • Beds start around $100, but the company has sales usually twice a year where you can buy beds at up to 50% off

 Amy Berry Dog Beds

We love Amy Berry dog beds! Unfortunately, at this time she is no longer selling them online. If you’re in the Dallas area though, be sure to pop in her store and check them out along with her beautiful home collection.

OMI Organic Dog Bed

Made with GOTS certified fabrics, any dog that loves to curl up when they sleep will love this bed! Handmade in the USA. Covers are fully washable. The only drawback is it’s only made for dogs up to 20 lbs.

Cane Dog Bed

We love this gorgeous cane dog bed for your little prince or princess! It’s not cheap at $799, but would be a beautiful addition to any home and a piece that you would have for years to come!

Alternatives to Traditional Dog Beds

If you are one of the 68% of Americans that allow their dog to sleep in their bed, then the Fursatile dog steps are for you. Fursatile was founded when owner Jenny Caulk couldn’t find products for her dog that were stylish yet functional and blended with her home decor, so she started making her own! Her company connects people and dogs with high-quality products that are magazine worthy, yet functional for the entire family.

Fursatile Step Ottoman is handcrafted in Italy from a solid beech wood frame. The ottoman can be used as pet steps or three independent ottomans—attached and detached by tongue and groove glides. Upholstered in a performance fabric that looks like linen but will stand the test of time and is cleaned easily. We can’t lie, Fursatile products make us swoon!

Exquisite Dog Crates

If your dog prefers to sleep in a crate or loves a den, Pretty Kennels are for you. These beautiful and chic Lucite crates provide unobstructed views and can be used throughout your home as end tables or as a stylish piece of furniture. They are a safe and relaxing space for your dog, while providing an alternative to traditional utilitarian wire crates. Finishes include either polished brass or polished chrome. We love that the business is female owned and Pretty Kennels are handmade in Austin, Texas.

All-Natural Treats to Help Your Dog Beat the Heat

Come July and August, it’s hot. With daily temperatures in many places 90+ degrees, many of us are feeling the heat. Now imagine these temperatures with a fur coat! Today we’re looking at some ways to help keep your dog feeling their best all summer long.

Healthy All-Natural Dog Treats for Summer!

Easy Cheap DIY Treats for Your Dog

Need to help your dog cool down after a long walk? Frozen yogurt cups are a great low calorie all-natural option that will help your pooch cool down quick.

What you need:

  • Little Plastic Containers (old yogurt cups work great)

  • Plain Non-Fat Yogurt

  • Spoon

Add-ins

  • Beef or Chicken Broth

  • Organic Peanut Butter

  • Grace’s Organic Treats

  • A Tiny Drizzle of Honey

Take a large spoonful of yogurt and drop it into each cup*. If your dog will eat it plain, you can stop here and simply pop the cups in the freezer for a few hours. We like to jazz ours up a little bit though. We add a spoonful of plain broth, a pinch of organic peanut butter, the crumbs from a bag of treats, or a tiny drizzle of honey to make these extra enticing. Think of it as adding sprinkles to your ice cream. If you add peanut butter, go with an organic option. Non-organic varieties contain a lot of toxins that can harm your dog.

Put them in the freezer for a few hours and voila! Simple cheap treats your dog will love!

Easy DIY Organic Dog Treats

Pop them in the freezer and they’re ready within an hour or two.

*For small dogs use a heaping teaspoon of yogurt per cup, for large dogs use a heaping tablespoon per cup.

Another Easy Treat for your Pup—Watermelon

With its sweet flavor and high water content, seedless watermelon is a great treat to cool your dog down on a hot day.

For small dogs a few cubes should do the trick. For larger dogs, we suggest 1 to 1.5 cups.

On hot days, be sure to limit outside play time. Go for walks early in the morning, in the evening, or on a densely shaded trail. On a 90 degree day, the asphalt temperature is 150+ degrees—that’s hot enough to easily burn paw pads! We hope these all-natural DIY treats help keep your dog cool all summer long!

If Heat Exhaustion Persists:

·       Give your dog a lukewarm shower. This will help to regulate their body temperature.

·       Provide them with an ice pack.

·       Place a fan on them.

·       Contact your veterinarian or local emergency veterinarian clinic.

The Organic Difference

Grace’s chooses to only use organic, all-natural ingredients in each batch of dog food it makes!

Grace’s has made a commitment to only using certified organic ingredients in each batch of dog food and dog treats we make! Why do we choose to only use organic products? Simply put, we believe organic is better for your dog and better for our planet.

Organic foods have been scientifically shown to be more nutrient dense. They also don’t contain toxic residues that can cause serious chronic conditions. Furthermore, meat raised organically has a significantly lower risk of bacteria that is resistant to superbugs.

What does it mean for a product to be called organic? By certifying a product as “USDA Organic,” it means the food is inspected and certified by an independent inspector, one that is not employed by either the buyer or seller of the food. Additionally, to be certified organic, the food is grown and processed according to federal guidelines that prohibit the use of harmful pesticides, cannot be derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and animals raised organically do not receive growth hormones or antibiotics. While some may consider the organic label nothing more than a marketing campaign, the cumulative effects of repeated exposure to pesticides have been linked to leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the brain, breasts, prostate, testis, and ovaries. Repeated exposure to these pesticides is also linked to reproductive harm and disruption of the endocrine system. Organic farming practices are not about producing the greatest amount of volume regardless of quality; organic farming is about using healthy soil to grow healthy plants while employing practices that have been around for thousands of years—such as crop rotation and the use of compost. Conventional farmers rely on dangerous chemicals to fight crop pests, provide plant nutrients, grow the food faster, and increase its overall weight.

Why Dogs Need Better Food

Why our dogs need better food

We believe that our dog is a member of the family. We want the best for our dog. And, we bet that you do too! We started Grace's Organic with one simple goal in mind - to help dogs live longer, healthier lives. Science has demonstrated that approximately 90% of health issues are related to diet and lifestyle choices. One definite way that pet owners can extend the life of their pets is to feed them the highest quality food they can.

You are what you eat! High quality, all-natural organic food will lead to your dog having fewer skin conditions, less itching, less inflammation, better digestion, stronger bones, more energy, improved immunity, and much more. In the long-term, you also will greatly reduce the risk for chronic disease, such as several types of cancer.

In today’s age, we are all looking for better products—products superior to what the previous generation used. With the advent of the internet, consumers now have more information than ever before. They see how traditional brands have profited, largely at our expense! The pet food industry is no exception to this, manufacturers have cut corners at the expense of our pets!

It was in 1956 that the first dry kibble was produced, and throughout the 1960s that the Pet Food Institute extensively marketed to consumers that commercially made pet food was the only option to feed. Before 1960, domestic dogs were simply fed table scraps. The cancer rate in dogs in the 1960s was 1 in 100. Today, dogs have the highest cancer rate of any mammal with the disease occurring in every 1 in 1.65 dogs. It is no coincidence that the cancer rate began to rise at the same time consumers began feeding their animals commercially produced food.

We knew there needed to be a better option than what was currently available. We started Grace’s for our love of dogs! This is why we ONLY use organic, human-quality, natural ingredients from local sources. Unlike other premium dogs foods, we use ZERO synthetic vitamins or minerals. By not using synthetics, dogs actually absorb the nutrients in their food as whole ingredients have important cofactors that make them work. As a result of using a wide variety of all-natural ingredients, our dog food EXCEEDS AAFCO standards.
